HISTORICAL OF
L'ASSOCIATION DES NORMAND D'AMÉRIQUE
An interest in genealogy in general and,
in particular, the history of Jean le Normand and Anne le Laboureur
-- the common ancestors of many of us – and that of our more immediate
families were the principal factors that led to the founding of l'Association des descendants de Jean le Normand, inc.
The Association was born on May 14, 1994, at the gathering of eight Normand
descendants. It was incorporated on Aug. 9 of the same year and, the
following Oct. 22, its general assembly announced the organization's official
founding. The 40 original members came from throughout Quebec and from
Ontario and the United States. Because the association now includes among its
members individuals whose roots are in the Normand dit
Poupeville and Normand dit
Jolicoeur families, the name of the organization
was modified in October 2000 to that of l'Association
des Normand d'Amérique.
Thanks to the talent, motivation and
dedication of Germaine Normand, the association is able to keep its members
informed of past and present family news and upcoming events through its
bulletin Le Normand.... In addition
to her work editing the bulletin, Germaine has performed many other services
for the association, including writing a rallying song and a historical
lament that, at the time of our reunions, help to solidify the spirit of the
family. Her research has also resulted in the publication of her book on the
first century of the Normands in Quebec: «Fonder
Foyer en Nouvelle-France.» The family arms proudly reflect
our French roots and Québec traditions. The motto "Érige
avec cran" ("Building with courage")
motivates our association and gives meaning to our meetings and exchanges.
