MORRISETTE CHAPEL

(St Clair, Hawkins County, Tenn., Usa)

Written by Mary Lynn Felsberg in March 2004

  • A chapel was built before 1883 on a piece of land donated by Richard-Mitchell Morrisette, a farmer and tannery owner of St Clair, Hawkins County, Tennessee, Usa. The Morrisette Chapel still stands and is used by an active Baptist congregation. The story says that Richard-M. Morrisette (1801-1883) died in the church in the middle of the summer and that his family just buried him outside the back door of the church.

  • Across the valley is the family cemetery, on the edge of a cow pasture. Second Richard's wife, Isabelle Lowery (1821-1873), and his mother, Mary Ford (1768-1857), are buried there, along with 3 infant sons. There are quite a few field stones, which are probably slave graves. The cemetery was cleaned up in 2000 by Mary Lynn Felsberg and her husband and a new fence was put up since the cows trampled it down. The farm owner's son keeps the weeds down for the family.
