The Association des Familles Michaud inc.

The Association des Familles Michaud (Association of the Michaud families) was founded in Quebec City, May 6, 1987. It mainly regroups people from Canada and the United States with the surname of Michaud, but a few Michauds from France are also members.

A number of factors were influential in the founding of the association: mainly, the aim to set up a structure that would allow the reuniting of the descendants of Pierre Michaud so that they can search and find their roots, that would provoke interest and disseminate the history of our ancestor and develop and promote some frienship and fraternity values among the membership.

The founding of the Association des Familles Michaud was, at the beginning, initiated by a few people with common interests, that got together to establish a structure. Enthusiasm was very high and recruitment was going wild. People were very interested in the idea of organizing a great gathering. As early as 1990, the association had almost one thousand and two hundred members.

June 30, 1990 was the first day of the celebration gathering called the Grandes Retrouvailles (the Great Reunion). For three days, eight hundred and fifty Michauds from Canada, the United States and France fraternized and celebrated Pierre Micheau and Marie Ancelin.

One of the most beautiful moment of these celebrations was certainly the unveiling in Kamouraska, of a monument to memory of the Ancestor, near the area where he spent the last part of his life.

The following years were marked by various interesting activities such as a trip to Fontenay-le-Comte, in Poitou, France, site of the birth of Pierre Micheau. These activities were always carried out in fraternity and have witnessed the eclosion of long lasting friendship among members of the Association.

After the first burst of enthusiasm in 1990, the Association des Familles Michaud, not unlike many other Family Associations, went through a period stamped by the lack of interest from its members. However, the perseverance and work of the people in place has allowed the Association to remain very active. Through the years, among its realizations, it has mounted a genealogical file of approximately twenty thousands Michauds, that it will eventually make available to its members. It also publishes a newsletter, Le Brelan, on a regular basis so that its members can be informed about the different activities, learn about their history, and keep in contact with each other.

The Association is always on the look-out for different ways to provide new and more numerous services to its members. You are thus invited to join us and take advantage of it.
