Descendants of Joseph-Marie Marquis

son of Charles-François Marquis

Dates to retain concerning Joseph-Marie Marquis, son of Charles-François Marquis:

- Born on April 17th, 1729 in Rivière-des-Caps and baptized on April 18th, 1729 in Saint André, Kamouraska.

- From 1729 to 1752 : Joseph-Marie spent his childhood on the paternal land by following his father. It was necessary at that time to cultivate, to build, to go fishing, to go hunting and to get itself bases necessary for the food and supply of the family. The development of the land and the agriculture constituted Joseph - Marie Marquis's main interest; he is mentioned as a farmer and a ploughman in several documents.

- Marriage of Joseph-Marie, on October 27, 1752, in Trois-Pistoles, with Marie-Françoise Côté, daughter of Prisque Côté and Geneviève-Ursule Bernier from L’Isle-Verte.

- From 1752 to 1809 : The active life of Joseph-Marie took place at Rivières-des-Caps, on his land constituted by a part of the fief of his father, to take care of his mother, widow in 1754, by assuming the guardianship of his young minor brothers and sisters, he takes care in the establishment of his children, he acquires lands, makes exchanges with his brothers-in-law, and takes care by emphasizing the lands which his wife Marie-Françoise Côté, by inheritance, acquired in L'Isle-Verte and which will serve to establish his two sons, Amable and Alexandre Marquis.

*Note from Louise Marquis from St-Pascal, in the bulletin "La Voix des Marquis : "It is thus by means of an inheritance that Marie-Françoise Côté, wife of Joseph-Marie Marquis, acquired to the family Marquis a piece of land of Isle-Verte, because Prisque Côté, father of Marie-Françoise Côté, was the son of Jean-Baptiste Côté, Lord of L'Isle Verte. The donation to the couple Marquis/Côté took place on March 11th, 1759 ".

* Note: Joseph-Marie thus inherited from the land because in this period, a woman could not inherit. But it is two of his sons, Joseph-Amable and Alexandre, that settled down there.

" The first house of Joseph-Amable Marquis, the first one arriving at Isle-Verte, was located on a land granted by the Lord near the River des Vases, in the first lot. His second house was located in the second lot. Vestiges were found right by the present location of the provincial road 132. The land of Joseph-Amable Marquis, inherited from his mother and his father, was cultivated by seven generations:

- His son Joseph-Amable dit José, spouse of Françoise Leduc, and his grand-son Narcisse Marquis, husband of Adélaïde Lebel, succeeded it.

- In 1849, Narcisse built the third house on the land of his ancestors.

- Achille Marquis, husband of Fébronie Simard, took it up afterward, after a temporary exile in New-Hampshire. The land was split to meet the needs of several families. In this period, the houses of four of the sons of Achille (Charles, Didyme, Luc, and Ludger) succeeded one another on the second lot.

- Luc Marquis, husband of Émilia Lévesque, then took over the land, followed by Aurèle Marquis, husband of Marie-angel Dubé.

- Aurèle bought the lands adjoining the farm and, therefore, he contributed to reconstitute, at least partially, Achille's land ; but we are far from the initial fief !

- Today, René Marquis is the successor of this long lineage on the paternal land".

- March 28, 1809 : Death of Joseph-Marie Marquis and burial in the cemetery of Saint André, Kamouraska, (today the Cradle of Kamouraska), after a life of dedication.
