Historical facts about the Association

The Kirouac Family Association was founded November 29, 1978 and incorporated February 26, 1986, in accordance with the laws of Quebec. The headquarters is situated in the urban community of Quebec. It deals with a non-profit organization whose purpose is to reunite all who are fascinated by history and genealogy. The Association has been a member of the Fédération des Familles- souches du Québec inc. since 1983.

Under the initiative of Jacques Kirouac, approximately 15 interested persons gathered on November 20, 1978 at Laval University in Sainte-Foy to organize the foundation of our family association. The Kirouac name was chosen for the association because it is shown to be the most popular form of spelling. In fact, we discovered that there are many ways of writing the name of our ancestor Maurice Louis Le Bris de K/voack. These different variations are: Kirouac, Kirouack, Kyrouac, Kérouac, Kérouac, Kérouack, Kéroack and Keroack. The purpose of our association is to gather all of his descendants, whatever the form of spelling.

The first great reunion was organized to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our ancestor in New France. On August 16 and 17, 1980, at L’Islet-sur-Mer in the center of the region where he settled, more than 700 descendants assembled, of which a hundred or more came from the United States. Two years later, the young association planned another reunion to commemorate the 250th wedding anniversary of our ancestor to Louise Bernier. At Cap Saint-Ignace, on September 5, 1982, in the same parish where the marriage had taken place, more than 300 persons reunited. These two large reunions were preceded in 1979 by regional meetings in Quebec, Montreal, Warwick in Les Bois-Francs and at Saint-Eugène-de-L’Islet.
