TRIBUTE TO FATHER DOMINIQUE GOSSELIN

GOLDEN SACERDOTAL JUBILEE OF L'ABBÉ DOMINIQUE GOSSELIN

On Saturday May 19, 2001, the family of Father Dominique Gosselin celebrated the 50th anniversary of his entry into the priesthood. A mass was held in the Ste-Anne-de-la-Pocatière Cathedral, followed by a banquet and a wonderful evening filled with stories and musical presentations by talented members of the family.

Here is a short biography of Father Dominique. Born in Lac-aux-Sables on May 31, 1922, son of Émile Gosselin and Nathalie Touzin. He completed his study of Classics at the Sainte-Anne-de-la Pocatière College and his study of Theology at the Main Seminary of Rimouski and the Main Seminary of Quebec City. He was ordained to the priesthood in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière on May 20, 1951 by Monsignor Henri Belleau, o.m.i., apostolic vicar of the James Bay region.

In 1952, he was named auxiliary priest at the Agricultural School of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière.In 1960, he became chaplain at the Bon-Secours Old Age Home on l'Islet. In 1962, he was named vicar in Saint-Eugène; in 1963, vicar in La Pocatière; in 1964, vicar in Mont-carmel. from 1960 to 1967, he was also diocesan chaplain of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Organization and from 1962 to 1965, he was diocesan chaplain of the Sacred Heart League. From 1965 to 1990, he was chaplain of the Thérèse-Martin Old Age Home in Rivière-Ouelle, and then chaplain in the same place as of 1990. Father Dominique has a Bachelor Degree in Arts and a Gerontology Diploma.

Father Dominique Gosselin was one of the founding members of the Gosselin Family Association and the most generous donor. He became "Governor Member", then President of the Administrative Council for 1 year. In 1999, he was the recipient of the "Laurent Gosselin Prize", at which time the Association honoured him for his precious collaboration towards the advancement of the historical research and genealogy related to the Gosselin family.

During the evening celebrating his Golden Sacerdotal Jubilee, the President of our Association paid tribute to Father Dominique in the name of all members of the Gosselin Family Association. The text of this speech has been reproduced in Newsletter No 26, August 2002.

History of Major Clement Gosselin by Henri Gosselin

              Web site of Henri Gosselin

Biography of Henri Gosselin

" During the Korean conflict, Henry (baptized "Henri") Gosselin - a Franco-American pacifist and the descendant of Clement Gosselin's great-grandfather - was drafted in the U.S. Army, and he served as Sergeant/Major of the First Battalion of the 5th Regimental Combat Team, which was engaged with the Chinese and North Koreans on the northwest ridge of the Punchbowl in North Korean (1952-1953). Although he never fired a weapon in combat, he was awarded the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant for meritorious service by the U.S. Secretary of the Army. He subsequently served as editor of a daily newspaper on a troopship from Sasebo, Japan to Seattle, Washington.

After his military discharge, he served as editor of weekly newspaper in Lisbon Falls and Lewiston. Then in Skowhegan, he was co-owner and editor of the Somerset Reporter for 11 years.

In 1968, he was named editor of Maine's Catholic weekly - the Church World - and worked for three Bishop-Publishers over a 26-year period. During 11 years that the paper competed with other diocesan papers, the Church World received 69 national awards for editorial excellence from the Catholic Press Association of the U.S. and Canada. Gosselin was the 1991 winner of the St-Francis de Sales Award - the highest award the Catholic Press Association confers. In 1972, he was knighted by Pope Paul VI in the Order of St-Gregory the Great.

A graduate of St-Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., he received a Master's Degree from the Boston University School of Public Relations and Communications in 1951. He is the recipient of two honorary degrees: Doctor of Humane Letters from St-Joseph's College in Standish, Maine; and Doctor of Journalism from St-Anselm College in N.H. In September 1996, he was honored by the Association des familles Gosselin d'Amérique for bearing with distinction the name "Gosselin".

After traveling to various undeveloped countries throughout the world to publicize the humane and charitable services of Catholic agencies, Henri Gosselin retired from his journalism duties to conduct research on the career of Clement Gosselin, George Washington's French-Canadian Spy." This text is offer at the page 216 on English version of the book.
