Drapeau’s Bldg., 1926, Biddeford, Maine, U.S.A.

Which Drapeau built this structure in Biddeford, Maine in 1926? Would someone have this information? Biddeford was a French-Canadian center during this era.

Flagg or Drapeau?

My descendant relatives were formerly known as Papillon. My great-grandfather was Francis Papillon, son of Etienne Papillon. They changed their name to Flagg, I'm told, so they could buy land in America. I don't know why they chose the name Flagg since it is not a direct translation of Papillon (butterfly). Sorry I can't be of much help.

Mallory Flagg, USA

The evolution of our family name amazed me when we went to Louisianna. In a shop in the French Quarter, there is a counter where people submit information on families. We saw the inscription of a DRAPEAU family of whom the descendants are called FLAGG.

I took the address of this house; if I find it, I will get the address to you.

Guy Drapeau, Kamouraska

I did some research concerning the origin of the Flagg families of the United States. It seems that the first Flaggs established themselves in the United States between 1635 and 1640, therefore would certainly not be the descendants of Antoine.

Gilbert Drapeau, Sainte-Marie de Beauce

To be continued, research goes on…

Drapeau or Flagg ?

Thank you for your response.

There is a story in the Flagg branch of my family to the effect that they once were French speakers from Canada and that the name was originally something that sounds like it might possibly have been "Drapeau".

The name Flagg in Masachusetts is very English and very Protestant, but these people were Catholics and they do, in fact, seem to have come from Canada. It could be, I suppose, that English Flaggs in the Eastern Townships took French wives and their children acquired thereby both the French language and the Catholic religion. But they might also have been Drapeaus.

One day, I'm sure, we'll find out.

Again, thank you for your help.

DM Grady

N.B. Nous voulons faire le lien avec ces Drapeau devenus Flagg, dans le cadre de notre compilation des mariages des Drapeau depuis 1669 à nos jours. Si vous avez des renseignements, communiquez avec nous. Merci!
