NORMAN ORIGIN
Our ancestor Damien Bérubé was born in Normandy on February 2nd 1647, at Rocquefort, a small community located 40 kilometres from Rouen. He was the son of Robert and Catherine Ferrecoq. Robert Bérubé, the father of Damien was baptised at Rocquefort on July 30, 1601.(1) There does not exist any indication as to his trade and who he worked for… It is particularly interesting to note that sieur Jean-Baptiste des Champs, Lord of Boishebert (1634-1662), is the godfather of Damien. Later on, the latter left Rocquefort for the New-France in the company of Jean-Baptiste François (1646-1703), cousin of Damien's godfather. We can ask ourselves what the connection was which united the family of Lord Boishebert and that of the Bérubé? (2)
Damien Bérubé was baptised in the old church of Rocquefort. The Baptismal certificate is preserved at the city hall of Fauville-en-Caux situated 8 kilometers West of Rocquefort.(3) Transcription of Damien's baptism (4)"Le 2 de febvrier 1647 a esté bapt. Damian fils de Rober berubé et Catherine Fercoq – nommé par Jehan bapt. deschamps Sr deboishéber et Catherine henry" Translation by Rosaire Bérubé(4)February 2, 1647 was baptized Damian, son of Rober berubé and Catherine Ferrecoq – named by Jean bapt. des champs Sr deboishéber and Catherine Henry Children of Robert Berube and of Catherine Ferrecoq (5)
Sculpture in homage of Damien (6)
In September of 1984, a high relief sculpture was carved by three Berube of the Quebec Beauce region (Paul, Renald and Rene ) and was unveiled at the church of Rocquefort. This homage to Damien was made possible thanks to the generosity of the three craftsmen and of the donations of a hundred or so Berube from Canada. (Click on the picture to enlarge) NAME HISTORY
Michel Bérubé wrote in Les Bérubé d'hier et d'aujourd'hui (7): [...] We don't know what this name "Bérubé" really means in French even if, phonetically, it sounds French. What we do know for sure is that was
spelled in many different ways, from Berrubay to Beruby and even Derubé.
Some theories have been reported in the Association newsletter, Le Monde Berrubey, about the name history. Michel made this summary: [...] Is the name the result of a mutation of the word "berbe", a bearded man in old times, from "Burbe", an ancient Saxon name, or from "Derubaix" also a family name, in Belgium,
that comes from the city of Roubaix?
His search led Michel to new questions: Is the name the result of a mutation of the word "Berrobi", a village of the Basque province of Guipuscoa? Actually, we don't have absolute proof that the first Berrube in Rouen was from a family of merchants originated in Berrobi.
