The genealogical sources to consult
To build one's genealogical tree

If you are interested in knowing the identity of your ancestors, get a good size hand bag and a good car because you will have to ride « a long way » in search of documents... and, God knows, that in genealogy, there are documents galore !!! In olden days, anyone too close to his priest, was considered to be a "baluster rodent". To day, affective relations are more liberal and less existential. One could consider our friend, Fernand Bélanger, a "stoical rodent" of parishes and civil records. In fact, Fernand likes to consult authentic documents of all kinds and amasses them in his genealogical cenacle. In Merovingian days, close to those of our ancestore, he would have been considered an "Antrustion des Bélanger". Hence, I have convinced him to show us all how to save time when carrying genealogical searches. Here is an extract of what he has concocted:

Consultation sources:

a) Parishes
b) County registry
c) National archives: Quebec and Canada
d) National libraries: Quebec and Canada
e) Municipal libraries
f) Genealogical societies
g) Patronymic associations

Parishes and civil registries:

The only, unique and true sources are baptismal, wedding and burial deeds, written by the officiating priest (priest or missionary) at these events. The documents were signed by the people present and countersigned by the person presiding the ceremony. At these occasions, two registries were drafted, one for the parish and the other for the county registry; the first called parish or religious and the other called civil. This was the way to proceed until 1994 when the Quebec Government decided, through a law, to centralize everything and entrusted the task to the civil registries. These two registries have served and now serve as bases for all the other sources of existing consultations.

Consultation documents:

From these registries, individuals, groups or organisms have prepared directories, encyclopedias, dictionnaries, etc., which may be consulted at the cited places, on top of those at the religious registries in the parishes and the civil, at the civil registries at the county registries.
