| Raymond Frigon (1) was the founding president of the Association of Frigon Families.
At the Annual General Meeting of the Association, held on May 22, 1999, in Montréal, he resigned as president after 5 years of continuous involvement. He was the passionate soul and leader who helped us create a dynamic and structured association. The first evidence of Raymond's interest in the origins of François Frigon goes back to 1967:a letter to monsieur Poule, of the École nationale des chartes, in Paris. This research brought about the hypothesis that Frigon may come from fragon, fregon, frigon (petit houx - a medicinal plant) 1. This indicates that his interest in François Frigon dates from some time back! At the beginning of the 1990s, with others, he undertook a systematic research by writing to the Archives of a number of French departements. A possible breakthrough at the mairie of Boutigny-sur-Essone, near Paris, turned into a disappointment: Charles Frigon, after consultations with handwriting experts, becomes Charles Bigon. At the time, at least four persons were interested in the origins of François Frigon and in his wife, Marie-Claude Chamois: Raymond (1), Robert (2), Luc (3) and Pierre (4).The 8th, 9th, and 10th of October, 1993, at the 50th Anniversary Convention of the Société de généalogie canadienne-française, Raymond (1) and Pierre (4) met for the first time. They discussed the importance of joining forces to avoid duplication of research and especially to set up a legally constituted organisation for membership recruitment. Raymond, Robert, Luc and Pierre met again later and the idea of an association was firmly established. Raymond took steps to incorporate an association. Its charter was granted on April 8, 1994.On May 7, 1994, at the Queen Elizabeth in Montréal, Raymond (1), Robert (2), Luc (3) and Pierre (4) became the first members of the board of directors of the Association: Raymond, president; Robert, vice-president; Luc, treasurer; Pierre, secretary. On September 17, 1994, in Montréal, Louis-Georges (10) and Jean-René (11) were present at a Board meeting. They undertook to help run a membership campaign. Jean-René agreed to select suitable genealogy software and manage its contents; Raymond agreed to produce the first newsletter, Robert to supply articles. The Association was really born that day!During that year, research was undertaken, meetings were held regularly and membership increased. August 31 and September 1, 1996, a great family reunion, picnic-style, took place in Batiscan.Raymond published the newsletter without interruption from the founding of the Association until January 2001. He looked after the recruitment and management of members outside of Québec and the English-speaking members. Today, members of the Association can be found in Quebec, Canada, the United States and Australia. The text of Marie-Claude’s court case has been published. The genealogical database has been computerized in view of publishing a Frigon genealogical dictionary. A commemorative panel was erected in memory of François and Marie-Claude in Batiscan , on the ancestor’s land. New research done at the Archives of France has lead to the discovery of some Frigons.
