Welcome to our Web site, which is dedicated to François Frigon dit (known as) Lespagnol and to Marie-Claude Chamois, courageous pioneers of Batiscan.
When we read the 17th and 18th century Acts of Concession, we are amazed at the courage of these pioneers who had only their two hands and a few rudimentary tools to build a home and assure a future for their children. Today, cutting down a tree or constructing a house can be done very quickly. But with only an axe, a hand saw, a few augers, a hammer and a few knives, it was quite a different matter. And the trees were big, three hundred years ago! Picture yourself with a forty-acre stand of trees, no house, and a piece of land as yet unfit for growing crops; you are newly married, your wife is pregnant and winter is on the doorstep.
Yes, it took courage! These men and women rolled up their sleeves and it is thanks to them and to those who followed that our country became so prosperous.
Few of them became wealthy. When they died, the inventory of their possessions showed how little these pioneers had, and how they often became indebted to the merchants or to their friends in order to survive until the next season. The list of receipts and bills that appeared in these inventories is often impressive. The list of assets is equally so, by reason of its modesty.
But they seemed to be happy. Life had been even more difficult in the homeland they left behind.
